Good bye rats nest.. I hope!
I’m not sure what Brinley does in her sleep but every morning she wakes up with this huge rats nest in the back of her hair. Her hair is so fine and soft that it tangles easily leaving just a mess in the morning. I always dread combing it out because I know that no matter how hard I try to be gentle, I’m bound to pull a tangle. This always results in tears and her whimpering, “Mommy you hurt me!” And that just breaks my heart.
So, I’ve been trying to come up with some ways to stop the rats nest from forming. I got some of that detangling spray to help comb it out, but it doesn’t work as well as I’d like. I’ve started using conditioner in her hair during baths but that doesn’t really make any difference with the tangles in the morning. I’ve tried to get her to wear her hair in a braid while she’s sleeping but she says it’s uncomfortable and I can’t blame her. Scott suggested we try a satin pillow case. We haven’t done that yet, but might try it.
I decided that it was probably time for her to get her hair cut. She’s three and a half and has only had one hair cut in her life, back in August. It was a pretty difficult experience. You can read the details here, but basically she freaked out and wouldn’t sit in the chair. I had to hold her on my lap and basically not let her know that her hair was being cut. The hairdresser couldn’t even spray her hair and she had to have a “dry cut”. It was fine because I was just trying to get it evened out.
Anyway, I mentioned to Brinley that getting her hair cut would make some of the tangles go away and she immediately jumped on the bandwagon (thank God!). She insisted on going to the “beauty parlor” that mommy goes to. I made her an appointment the last time I was there but when the time came for her to go, she decided that she didn’t want to. This was about three weeks ago. Well, the rats nests kept on appearing every morning and the tears kept falling when it was time to comb it out. Brinley started to ask to have her hair cut again. I told her that when she was ready that we could go and her only request was that it be on a Friday. (I have no idea why or where this came from, but I obliged.)
Today was the day.
It was a huge success! I can not believe what a difference seven months have made for her. This time we got there and she was so excited. She jumped right up into the big chair all by herself. She gladly let Robbin (her hairdresser) put a black cape on her.
When Robbin asked if she could spray Brinley’s hair, she said, “Sure thing!” (too cute!) This was a real hair cut too. It was sectioned out and pinned up and cut in sections. She had about 5 inches cut off! Brinley had such a happy look on her face and I could tell that she was so proud of herself. I was so proud of her too!
I’m hoping that this haircut helps with our rats nest problem. I guess we’ll find out in the morning.

C’s hair is about as long as her “before” picture- thankfully we haven’t had any tangle issues yet really. I’ve trimmed it a tiny bit myself a few times but no real cuts yet.

Her haircut is beautiful! I love it!
Hoping no more–or a lot less tangles for her {and you to have to brush
}
